depends on the foreground, say you have green in the foreground you don't really want red in the background cause then you have christmas colors (unless thats the intent)

Ah, well the foreground isn't going to be very colourful at all, skintone and greyscale mostly. Hope that helps

Black makes colours pop and light grays work very well, but should be avoided if darker grays or almost-black reds, blues, etceteras are being used.



White should be avoided in every situation, as it is the "screaming" colour and pulls the eye's attention away from main subject of the drawing/painting, etcetera. This is why white highlights often catch the eye before anything else does.

Wow, thanks for the help! I was thinking about black, but I think I want this thing to be more light-hearted, as black might make it feel a bit dark. I'm thinking of using a relatively bright colour, I'm just not sure which would look best. I'll have to try them out and see but once again, cheers for all the help!

dramatic go with red, calmer go with blue, neutral I recommend yellow or green. mind these are very general guidelines
